Rates of neurodiversity are high, with around 1% of the population considered to be autistic, and an estimated 5% to have ADHD. However, the actual figures may be much higher. There are further neurodiversities; dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and others. Many neurodivergent people have multiple diagnoses.
Whilst there are undoubtedly gifts associated with being neurodivergent, the burden of neurodiversity can be heavy. Many neurodivergent people face complex mental health challenges, burnout and workplaces difficulties. The Office of National Statistics demonstrate that employment rates for autistic people can be as low as 30%.
Not everyone who is neurodivergent is recognised as such; many people face long and challenging waiting lists for diagnosis and support, and others have never even considered that they may be neurodivergent. Lots of neurodivergent people are treated for mental health complications of their neurotype, but the underlying diagnosis has never been considered by professionals.
